Starting dhclient on startup

I am running ArchBSD on virtualbox.

A previous post  mentioned an inability to run dhclient on startup. The solution was to use /etc/rc.local for startup programs. However, freebsd dropped that ability in favor of dropping scripts in /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ according to this article. I tried that method and it doesn't work for me.

I also noticed that /etc/rc.conf contains the following line:

ifconfig_emo="DHCP"

This follows the freebsd method of starting the network on boot. However, this also doesn't work for me.

How are we supposed to run programs on startup?

Re: Starting dhclient on startup

I just fixed this in the latest FreeBSD-Config package.

local startup dir is now set to /etc/local.d/ to match the same used by openrc/

Just place what scripts you want to start automatically in there.

+local_startup="/etc/local.d" # startup script dirs.

Will be available in repository in a few minutes.

Also note. FreeBSD-init needs to be installed to use /etc/rc.conf

If you're using openrc (which doesn't have a working network script currently. You can use /etc/local.d

Just remember to

chmod +x

the files.

Re: Starting dhclient on startup

I installed freebsd-init and still cannot use ifconfig_em0="dhcp" in /etc/rc.conf. I still cannot get the internet run on startup.

Re: Starting dhclient on startup

Yeah, I also experience this problem, but can't figure out why it's happening.

Anyways, as a workaround you can set:

synchronous_dhclient="YES"

in [file]/etc/rc.conf[/file]
