So this is ...

... just "FreeBSD + pacman + different init"?

FreeBSD itself is not really made for desktop usage, I could not find a decent laptop yet which would have had working WiFi drivers. So I was just wondering if there is any advance of ArchBSD for desktops. If so, I would willingly want to try it. If WiFi drivers exist. :-)

(BTW, this forum still says "Arch Linux discussions".)

What was the goal of the Linux community--to replace Windows? One can imagine higher aspirations.

Re: So this is ...

I don't know about the current status, but back when I bought my laptop (I'm one of the few people who use these things until they actually break rather than buying a new one every 6 months just "because"), linux wasn't doing that great with WLAN either... I had to use separate drivers for a while until they got finally merged upstream.

Judging from this, my laptop's wifi would be supported: "iwn"

Also ArchLinux is just GNU+Linux+pacman+different init.
It's a distribution, not an OS, like OpenBSD or NetBSD.   wink

I have no WiFi driver for my laptop also on Linux.  sad

Re: So this is ...

Ah, I see.
The project goals were not really clear yet. If ArchBSD wants to target a desktop audience, some more configuration would be fine.

Re: So this is ...

ArchBSD is mainly intended for desktop usage, like Arch is. The init is much faster and the packages install really fast with pacman. Other that the hardware support is the same than for FreeBSD and it's handbook is also mostly relevant for ArchBSD.

Re: So this is ...

I don't see the issue. We're already testing Mesa 9.0 and Xorg 1.13 on ArchBSD. Plus, configs are already set for desktop usage. Kinda copied some kernel settings / file system settings from Linux distributions.
